Hello Dorchester
January 2008 Hello to all. I just came across this online community and really find myself excited about the possibilities of being able to give away information on community activities, social and political events & any current affair or environmental project that I may be privy to, especially if it has a local significance. That said it provides a perfect segue for my first posting. A significant chunk of Dorchester abuts Franklin Park. Many of us who have lived here long or were raised here having Franklin Park, essentially, as their own back yard, (I was raised on the J.P. side of Franklin Park) have fond memories and quite an appreciation for the spread of nature that we have access to. As you can imagine, a park with high volumes of human access has its shares of wear and tear, conversely, nature comes with its own inherent set of problems. This Saturday morning, the Franklin Park Coalition, a decent sized group, myself included will be learning to cut a prickly vine –“catbrier or similax- that grows in dense thickets and wraps itself around trees killing them” There, the exact words from the experts. It is our park people, I know this is short notice but visit there website, I’m sure they will have other upcoming conservation projects or something else that might suit you better. They are at http://www.franklinparkcoalition.org/map-of-park/ Saving trees man! One thing you’ll be sure of is that all of the events, updates, and links that I will post will be of things that I fully stand behind or consider worthy of our attention. I’ll do what I can for the community and environment, and no, I’m not in the Human Services, it just so happens that as I’ve grown, I find great satisfaction while in service for my surroundings and my fellow human beings. Written by me, for my community members. I’ll check in periodically, and look forward to acquiring all bits of knowledge you’ll have available. Luis Santos
